Exploring Oxford North: a site visit with Activate Learning’s six young women on #IWD2024

08/05/2024

On International Women’s Day, we were proud to welcome six enthusiastic young women from Activate Learning‘s Oxford campus for a Females in Construction Insight Day trip to Oxford North.

Organised by Laing O’Rourke, we welcomed two Level 2 Electrical Installation students, and four L1 Bricklaying students. But before they finish their courses in July and join the construction workforce, we wanted to give them a sneak peek into what lies ahead!

Laing O’Rourke arranged for them to visit our Red Shed marketing suite where they had a chance to understand the project’s vision, see the architects’ model and attend a short presentation. And no tour would be complete without exploring the site itself and a trip to our viewing platform to see the Red Hall and new laboratories taking shaping!

The day ended with a “Trade Insight” session, where the students had the chance to speak to one of our Brickwork Sub-Contractors Brickstone Construction, and Laing O’Rourke’s Sub-Division Crown House Technologies – responsible for the electrical packages for the project’s Phase 1a. They heard from both companies about their businesses, their apprenticeship opportunities and what they are delivering on this project.

Victoria Collett, Development Director, Thomas White Oxford said: “What an impressive group of young women who clearly have a passion for their studies and future careers in construction. To meet them on International Women’s Day was very poignant and a moment for celebration. We hope they enjoyed their experience and look forward to keeping in touch as they progress in their studies and future jobs.”

As the girls finish their entry level college courses, they are actively seeking trade apprenticeships for 2024 starts.

We directed them to all our apprenticeship opportunities at Oxford North, currently live on our Jobs page.

Keep an eye out for these talented young people as they embark on their journey towards success!

Thank you to all involved for sharing your insights and expertise with us. We believe it’s important for students to gain hands-on experience and exposure to different aspects of the industry and it was wonderful seeing the group engage with our team and gain valuable insight into our construction industry.
